Your preferences, history, choices, corrections, and the understanding built from them should remain under your control.

OWN YR DATA.
YourLens does not believe that a person’s preference model should be trapped inside a platform, hidden inside an algorithm, or quietly converted into an asset they cannot see, understand, or control.
We are building YourLens around a simple principle:
The consumer should have meaningful control over their data and the digital understanding built from it.
Not theoretically.
Not buried in terms and conditions.
In the product itself.
Don’t Be Creepy.
Technology can be useful without becoming invasive.
YourLens should help people understand themselves, discover things they value, and make better decisions. It should not make people feel watched, manipulated, or exposed.
That means:
- no hidden collection;
- no surprise uses;
- no confusing permissions;
- no vague claims of “personalization” masking unwanted surveillance;
- no sharing that a reasonable person would not expect.
If a feature cannot be explained plainly, it probably should not exist.
BYOA: Bring Your Own Algorithm.
Consumers should not be forced to accept a single company’s interpretation of who they are.
YourLens is designed to create a portable preference layer that can support different recommendation models, assistants, services, and experiences.
The Lens belongs to the user.
The algorithm is a tool.
Over time, consumers should be able to choose how their Lens is interpreted, which models they trust, and what kinds of recommendations they receive.
The future should not be one algorithm deciding what everyone sees.
It should be people choosing the intelligence that works for them.
The User Owns the Lens.
YourLens may help build, structure, and improve the Lens, but ownership remains with the consumer.
Users should be able to:
- see what is in their Lens;
- correct it;
- remove information;
- export it;
- transfer it;
- delete it;
- decide where it can be used.
The Lens is not collateral.
It is not inventory.
It is not a hidden company asset.
Consent Must Be Explicit.
Consent should be understandable, specific, and reversible.
A user agreeing to import viewing history is not automatically agreeing to share travel preferences.
A user sharing restaurant preferences with one service is not agreeing to expose their full entertainment history to another.
Permission should be granted for a clear purpose, for a defined period, and at a level the user can understand.
Consent is not permanent.
It can be changed.
Sharing Should Be Granular.
Privacy is not a binary choice between “share everything” and “share nothing.”
Users should be able to share only what is needed.
A travel service may need to know that someone prefers quiet coastal towns, boutique hotels, and walkable neighborhoods.
It does not need their full Netflix history.
A restaurant service may need dietary preferences and cuisine affinities.
It does not need access to everything else the user has watched, listened to, purchased, or visited.
Good personalization requires relevance, not unlimited access.
Data Should Be Portable.
A user should be able to take their Lens with them.
Today, consumers can often obtain raw data from platforms, but those exports are frequently difficult to understand and even harder to use.
YourLens exists in part to close that gap.
Portability should mean more than receiving a file.
It should mean receiving something useful.
The consumer should be able to move their Lens—or the relevant parts of it—across services, tools, and platforms without starting over each time.
The Model Should Be Inspectable.
People should be able to see how YourLens understands them. Your Lens is an interpretation, not a definition. It reflects what YourLens has learned from the evidence you choose to provide, and it should remain open to correction, context, and change. It describes what seems to work for you based on what we know so far.
A preference model should not be an invisible judgment engine.
Users should be able to review the traits, patterns, and signals influencing their Lens.
They should be able to say:
- this is right;
- this is incomplete;
- this is outdated;
- this is wrong;
- this should not be used.
A model that affects a person’s experience should be open to that person’s inspection.
Recommendations Should Be Explainable.
A recommendation should come with a reason.
Not a technical explanation.
A useful one.
“You may like this because you tend to enjoy slow-burn crime dramas with morally ambiguous characters.”
“This restaurant fits your preference for casual neighborhood places, regional food, and low-noise environments.”
“This destination matches your interest in historic cities, local food, and walkable neighborhoods.”
Explainability creates trust.
It also helps users improve the Lens.
A recommendation system should not simply say, “Trust us.”
It should earn that trust.
The Consumer Benefits First.
YourLens may create value for businesses, platforms, and developers, but the system should first create value for the person whose data makes it possible.
The consumer should receive:
- better recommendations;
- less searching;
- less repetition;
- greater control;
- greater portability;
- greater transparency;
- more time back.
YourLens should never make the Lens less useful, less accurate, or less understandable to the consumer in order to make it more valuable to a business.
Commercial value should follow consumer value, not replace it.
People Need to Flex Their Muscles.
Rights weaken when people stop using them.
Consumers technically possess important rights over their information, but those rights often remain abstract because the tools are difficult, the processes are inconvenient, and the resulting data is unusable.
People need practical ways to exercise ownership.
They need to download their data.
Inspect it.
Correct it.
Move it.
Use it.
Withdraw it.
YourLens should make those actions ordinary.
The goal is not to make every person a privacy expert.
The goal is to make consumer control usable enough that people actually practice it.
Trust Must Be Built Into the Product.
Privacy cannot be a legal layer added after the product is designed.
It must shape:
- the data model;
- the permissions system;
- the user experience;
- the business model;
- the recommendation architecture;
- the partner strategy;
- the product roadmap.
Every product decision should be tested against a simple question:
Does this increase the user’s control, understanding, and benefit—or reduce it?
That is not merely a compliance standard.
It is the product standard.

A better system is possible:
